Where to Look for Los Angeles Hotel Jobs

As tourist season approaches, more people will be looking for Los Angeles hotel jobs, but do you know where you can find work this season?

The hotel industry is a great one to get into, especially if you like working with people and are looking for a job that will most likely offer a lot of flexibility. In most places throughout the nation, hotel jobs are becoming more available as the economic recession comes to a close and tourism picks up.

Los Angeles is no exception, as the local hospitality industry continues to fare well. And given that Los Angeles is the second-largest city in America and attracts plenty of tourists every year, there are plenty of places to find hotel jobs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale area's leisure and hospitality industry employed 388,900 workers during December, which is up from 387,300 workers during November and a 3 percent increase from last year.

According to LA Inc., a number of hotels in the area have either opened recently, are scheduled to open soon, or are being renovated. Some hotels may want to conduct California background checks before hiring you.

Glendale Jobs Depend on Casino's Fate

Thousands of Glendale jobs (Click here) hang in the balance as officials debate the construction of a new casino.

There has been much debate surrounding potential plans for a new casino run by the Tohono O'odham Nation in the City of Glendale. If built, the casino is expected to create 6,000 temporary construction jobs and 3,000 permanent jobs and attract 1.2 million visitors each year.

However, some city and state officials have been working to block development of the casino, despite the economic impact it would have. They state the casino's location would be too close to a local high school and have a negative impact on other businesses in the area.

In fact, the city and a group of state lawmakers are suing the U.S. Department of the Interior in an effort to stop plans for the casino, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. The federal government previously approved the tribe's request to build the casino.

Even so, West Valley Resort recently released an updated plan for the casino, which would take up about 220,000 square feet on 54 acres at Northern and 95th avenues. The property would initially include 54,750 square feet of gaming space, sports bar, food court, 400-seat buffet, 24-hour 150-seat cafe, and events center. A hotel would be added later on.

"Public support for our project has been overwhelming and we are determined to move forward with this project, despite opponents' efforts to delay," O'odham Chairman Ned Norris Jr., said. "These renderings are an example of the work that is being done right now so that we can be ready to start construction as soon as possible."

Family Counselors in Demand on College Campuses

More colleges are looking to hire family counselors as a large number of students continue to seek counseling.

A survey released last year by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors found that 10.2 percent of college students sought counseling during the 2008-2009 academic year, which is the same as the previous two surveys.

The demand for family counselors on college campuses created more jobs over the year, with survey respondents reporting that 82 clinical professionals were hired, while only 34 counselors lost their jobs during the same time.

"We saw these small gains in staffing, but I'm not sure the same thing will happen in our next survey because of economic conditions," Victor M. Barr, director of counseling and psychological services at the University of Tennessee and lead author of the survey, told USA Today.

Schools with fewer than 1,500 students saw an average of 18.3 percent of students seek counseling, while schools with more than 35,000 students saw an average of 7.2 percent of students seek counseling.

Of those who responded to the survey, 73 percent said the number of students on psychotropic medication who are seeking counseling increased, while 71 percent said the number of students with severe psychological problems was increasing.

Depression was the most common problem among students, at 37.5 percent, followed by anxiety at 36.8 percent, and relationship issues at 35.9 percent.

Technology Sales Jobs Phoenix Focusing on Green

The number of technology sales jobs Phoenix has to offer will continue to grow in the near future, and a lot of that growth will be in the green-collar industry.

A lot of technology companies are cashing in the concept of creating green jobs, or jobs that focus on performing environmentally-friendly work. As more companies start to sell green-focused technology, the need for technology sales employees will become stronger.

Siemens A.G. is a great example of a company planning to cash in on green technology. The company, which is the largest conglomerate in Europe, expects its green technology to bring in more than $55.83 billion in revenue by 2014.

"Green innovations are our lifeblood," Barbara Kux, who is responsible for managing Siemen's sustainability efforts and green portfolio, told Ecoseed Information Network. "We're the largest supplier of environmental technologies in the world."

The technology that Siemens is seeing the most demand for includes combined-cycle power plants, wind farms, retrofitting of existing power plants, energy efficient lighting systems, and eco-friendly trains. The company also predicts that demand for smart grid systems will begin to pick up soon.

Siemens also produces energy-saving lamps; energy-saving motors and solar inverters for building technologies; biomass plants; ground-based and rooftop photovoltaic power plants; and wind and steam turbines.

To date, the technology created by Siemens has helped its customers throughout the world reduce carbon dioxide by 270 million tons, which is equivalent to the total carbon dioxide emissions produced by Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.

Dallas Healthcare Jobs for Family Therapists

There will be plenty of Dallas healthcare jobs available for family therapists in the years ahead.

Marriage and family therapists work with individuals, couples, or families to diagnose and treat a variety of mental and emotional disorders. They may deal with cognitive, affective, or behavioral problems that are negatively impacting the family dynamic.

The amount of education required to become a family therapist varies from state to state, but most employees have a master's degree and a license to practice. In Texas, employees are required to pass a national exam and a jurisprudence exam in order to obtain their license.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 27,300 marriage and family therapists throughout the nation during 2008. Most therapists are self employed or work in a group or private practice.

Employment of family therapists in Texas is expected to grow from 740 workers during 2008 to 860 by 2018, resulting in 120 additional jobs and an overall increase of 16.2 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The top industries that employ family therapists throughout the state include:

• Individual and family services - 57.69 percent
• Religious organizations - 11.02 percent
• Self-employed workers - 5.99 percent
• General medical and surgical hospitals - 5.17 percent
• Residential mental retardation, mental health and substance abuse facilities - 4.63 percent
• Other residential care facilities - 3.4 percent
• Local government, except education - 3.4 percent
• Offices of other health practitioners - 2.18 percent
• Community food, housing, emergency, and other relief services - 2.04 percent

The Best and Worst Jobs for 2011

Are you thinking about applying to San Antonio construction jobs (Click here)? How about working as a painter? Maybe a taxi driver?

If so, you may want to think again, because these jobs and many more were recently ranked among the worst occupations this year.

CareerCast.com recently released the Jobs Rated 2011 report, a survey that ranks 200 different jobs, from best to worst. The positions are ranked based on physical demands, work environment, income, outlook, and stress.

The 10 worst jobs include:

1. Roustabout
2. Ironworker
3. Lumberjack
4. Roofer
5. Taxi driver
6. Emergency medical technician
7. Welder
8. Painter
9. Meter reader
10. Construction worker

This list alone shouldn't discourage you from applying to these jobs. In fact, many of the positions listed pay high salaries, and some are even expected to grow in the coming years. However, just be aware that most of these jobs are demanding and stressful.

At the other end of the spectrum are the 10 best jobs, which include:

2. Mathematician
3. Actuary
4. Statistician
5. Computer systems analyst
6. Meteorologist
7. Biologist
8. Historian
9. Audiologist
10. Dental hygienist

There are a number of popular jobs that didn't make it on the best or worst lists. For instance, healthcare is an extremely popular industry right now, but the only tradition positions to be listed were nurses and surgeons. Other popular occupations, such as radiology jobs (Click here), were nowhere to be found.

Food jobs, which also are popular among many people, were ranked pretty low. Waiters and waitresses came in at 139th, while bartenders were ranked 140th.

November Saw More Job Openings in Miami

Despite maintaining a high level of unemployment, there were still plenty of job openings in Miami last November.

That month, the Miami area's unemployment rate dropped to 13 percent after remaining at 13.1 percent for two consecutive months. Unfortunately, that rate is still much higher than the national average of 9.8 percent.

However, the area still continued adding jobs during November, going from 979,500 workers during October to 987,100 workers during November. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is a .5 percent increase in employment when compared to 2009.

The trade, transportation, and utilities industry accounted for the majority of the area's monthly employment gain, adding 3,900 jobs to its workforce. That was followed by the government's addition of 1,800 workers.

Four other industries also saw a monthly increase in employment, including: education and health services by 900 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 800 jobs; other services by 500 jobs; and information by 100 jobs.

Employment in the mining and logging industry remained even over the month and year with 300 jobs. All other industries lost jobs during November.

Only three industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment. The leisure and hospitality industry experienced the biggest growth, increasing by 3.3 percent, for a current total of 105,300 workers.

That was followed by the education and health services industry, which grew by 2.8 percent to 164,100 jobs, and the trade, transportation, and utilities industry, which increased by 2.4 percent to 250,500 workers.

Industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:

• Construction by 7 percent to 31,800 jobs
• Manufacturing by 5.3 percent to 34,000 jobs
• Information by 5.2 percent to 16,500 jobs
• Financial activities by 3.2 percent to 61,100 jobs
• Professional and business services by .5 percent to 130,000 jobs
• Other services by .5 percent to 39,000 jobs
• Government by .5 percent to 154,500 jobs
